A French-Toast Kind Of Day?

So…we are snowed in today.  I am not complaining…I actually like it.  I get to hang out with my wife and kids and get some thing done that absolutely MUST get done such as packing, finishing up some ordination paperwork, and reading some things I need to read.

It is funny to me though, watching the TV and listening to the radio.  Everyone was preparing for the big storm.  I am not sure how many people said they went to the store to get milk, bread, and eggs.  Really?  Those are your necessities?

I can understand milk and bread.  I am just not really sure why eggs are the necessity.  I would place meat, beans, and anything I can eat without cooking before eggs.  Because let’s face it, if you lose power…your eggs are kinda useless…right?

One clever lady at Lowe’s yesterday told me that the reason everyone needs those items is because all the snow makes people hungry for french toast.   Well…I thought…that’s the best answer I have heard for the deep need for eggs.

I think…even if french toast is our excuse…people just need to feel prepared.  And, if they go out and get a few things that seem like staples then they feel prepared.  I mean, everyone wants to be prepared…whether it is the right kind of preparation or not.

Jesus talks a little about preparation…

Understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into.  You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him. (Lk 12:39-40)

We complain a lot about the weather guys being wrong all the time.  But, when they call for a storm…we listen.  We listen so much that we boost the grocery store’s revenues.  We even go buy generators from Lowe’s (which, by the way, were selling the like hotcakes two days ago).  We like to be prepared…but we also like to wait until the last minute.

Everyone could have been stocked with milk, bread, and eggs.  Those who rushed to buy a generator could have done so a long time ago.  They could have been ready.  They could have been prepared.  But…they waited.  They waited until it was just about to happen…then they prepared themselves.

I am not so sure, when it comes to Christ returning…that we will have that luxury.  We must be prepared.  And we must be prepared now…because we don’t have an “return of Christ” segment on the evening news.  It will happen when it happens…and you will not know when that happens.  And…when you do know the time…it is already too late.

In case this is not clear…

At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.  Five of them were foolish and five were wise.  The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them.  The wise, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps.  The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.  At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’  Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps.  The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’  “‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’  “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.  “Later the others also came. ‘Sir! Sir!’ they said. ‘Open the door for us!’  “But he replied, ‘I tell you the truth, I don’t know you.’ (Mt 15:1-12)

Are you prepared?
