Ignorant – lacking knowledge or comprehension of the thing specified.
The study was quite simple. 32 religious knowledge questions focusing on various religions and major figures of those faiths. Here are the results:
On average, Americans correctly answer 16 of the 32 religious knowledge questions on the survey by the Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life. Atheists and agnostics average 20.9 correct answers. Jews and Mormons do about as well, averaging 20.5 and 20.3 correct answers, respectively.
Protestants as a whole average 16 correct answers; Catholics as a whole, 14.7. Atheists and agnostics, Jews and Mormons perform better than other groups on the survey even after controlling for differing levels of education.
Really? Christians scored that low? We are called to make disciples of all nations. But we should all be smart enough to know that in order to do that we must know something about those we are dealing with.
Shouldn’t we know a little more about the religions around us. Atheists seem to have learned more than we have. Agnostics even think it is more important than we do.
Maybe the problem is that we like to hide in our little box of Christianity and shield ourselves from the rest of the world. Our mentality is that eventually those people will realize that they need the Christian church and they will come learn about us.
Well…if you are one of those…you are ignorant. We are called to GO to the world in order to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with the world…not sit back and wait.
Take some time and learn about the world around you. If you do…maybe you will find new ways to relate and connect with those around you.
But…if you want to stay in your little box of Christianity…good luck with that. I’m getting out of the box.
You can take a survey to see where you rate in your knowledge (or ignorance) of religious things. Below are my shocking results. And yes…I am shocked!
