Hope in the Darkness

I was just on Facebook where I am a “fan” of the Indiana State Parks.  They recently posted a question inquiring of those connected:

What is your favorite sign of spring?

I didn’t have to think long before I realized that my favorite sign of Spring is the weather…like it is today.  It is warmer…right around 62 degrees today, but the wind is blowing, the sprinkles are falling, and the clouds are blanketing the sky.  I love it!  And I think, one of the reasons I love it so much is because in the midst of a dreary day…there is hope.

We can tell it is nearly Spring because the temperatures are rising, but it just is not quite here yet.  There are still signs of winter all around us.  But…would Lent have it any other way?

In this season of repentance and preparation for the Easter celebration, we must always remember that we are on this side of the Resurrection.  While we spend a lot of time talking about our fallen nature and our sinful behaviors, we do so with one eye (maybe even both) on the hope that is found in Easter.  We are forgiven…we are saved…we are redeemed.

However, while we know that we have received the grace and mercy of Christ already in our lives…the clouds of sin still hover, the drops of temptations continue to fall, and the winds of a culture that tells us to abandon our convictions and beliefs is still blowing.

So…this Lent…and this Spring…as you look at your life and enter into repentance, remember that Spring is just around the corner.  New life is waiting for you.  It has been given to you.  And you will receive it when that day comes.  So, as for the sprinkles, the clouds, and the winds…just remember…that in the midst of it all…there is hope because the temperature is climbing  when Spring…or Christ…will return.
