Twitter Blunders

So…I tweet.  I am not the greatest tweeter of all time…but I do tweet.  And sometimes…I have discovered…a simple tweet can be miscommunicated.  Yesterday, we talked about Rahab (a prostitute in Scripture) and I wanted to be sure I let people know through my tweets what we were talking about.  To follow is one of those twitter-announcements:

Maybe you didn’t catch how this can be misinterpreted…but odds are you did.  I didn’t until a friend mentioned it.  We did NOT bring up a prostitute from our congregation.  Rather…we talked about a prostitute from Scripture…at The Grove.  Simple words…simple mistake.  What kind of social media blunders have you had?

I can’t help but shake the story of Eve this morning.  We all know that she ate the fruit that she was not supposed to eat but there was a deeper issue in it all.  Eve was tempted to believe that she could be like God…and let’s be honest…that sounds pretty cool.  But even still…I think there was something else going on.

You see…the serpent was able to change Eve’s perception.  She perceived the fruit to be good…and beneficial to her.  The problem was that God had already told her that if she ate it she would die.  So she faced a dilemma in her life.  She could believe in the Truth that God spoke to her…or she could believe that her perception of reality was more accurate than God’s Truth.  Eve chose her own perception…and the rest…well…it is history…and it is our current predicament.

I think we all struggle with what Eve struggled with.  Our perceptions of reality scream awfully loud and we are constantly tempted to allow our perceptions to override God’s Truth.  This problem strikes us all…even you.  Where in your life are you allowing your perception of reality to override God’s Truth for your life?

1 in 175,711,536?

So…I just watched something about the current MegaMillions jackpot that has reached an astronomical $540 million.  That is a lot of candy bars right there!

A comment was made during the segment that said with the jackpot climbing so high, your odds of winning has now climbed to 1:175,711,536.  Wait a minute!  Your odds don’t change at all.  It doesn’t matter if there are 40 people playing or 40 million people playing.  Your odds of picking the right numbers remains the same.  You are not in competition with the other people.  You are in competition with the moving air that pushes the little balls through the machine and out the tube.

It is amazing to me that so many people run out to get a ticket because they believe they have a shot at beating the odds.  There must be something about the big gamble that humans enjoy.  But…what blows my mind even more is that there are millions of people gambling right now with their lives.  They have decided not to know Christ.  They have put off making a decision for Christ so they can have a little fun (as if a relationship with Jesus isn’t fun).  This is a big gamble too.  Especially considering the odds of one being forgiven and saved if they repent and ask Christ to forgive them is right around 1:1.

I am not a gambler…but even if I were…I am not really one to take the 1 in 175 million shot.  I am just not that lucky anyway.  I stand a better chance at racing my daughter up the stairs…then again…I lose that all the time too.  But…I’ll take the sure thing every day…and I do.

What about you?
